As president of the AMIA Student Chapter for the 2014-2015 school year, one of my major goals was to organize a workshop to teach the basic principles of media archiving.
Having always admired the Echo Park Film Center’s (EPFC) great community-based workshops, I reached out to them to organize a collaboration. In May 2015, the AMIA Student Chapter will be presenting a media archiving workshop at EPFC, which will seek to teach the community about proper storage techniques, cataloging, media transfer, and more. We hope to teach not just about film, but also about video and digital files. Having taken MIAS 289: Digital Asset Management, several of the AMIA Student Chapter members are familiar with digital storage, migration, and preservation techniques that may not be familiar to those outside the archival community.
